This flash animation outlines what happens when a separating funnel is used to separate a mixture of two immiscible liquids such as oil and water or an ester and water.
The least dense liquid forms a layer on top of the other.
1. Pour the mixture from a beaker into the separating funnel.
2. Allow to stand for several minutes until the liquids have fully separated into distinct layers. There should be no cloudiness in the layers as this would indicate they haven't fully separated.
3. Open the tap and allow the lower layer to run out into a clean beaker below,
4. When the lower liquid is almost fully out, control its speed using the tap.
