The most important role of political parties is nominating the candidates who will run for office. Most candidates for state and federal office are chosen in a direct primary, which can be either open or closed. In a presidential election year, each party holds a national convention. During these conventions, each party chooses its candidate for President, approves that candidate's choice for Vice President, and approves the party's platform.
