Conflict between and within nations can, and frequently does, occur. A conflict can take many forms, from a war of words to an armed struggle. The basic causes of conflict include: clashes over beliefs and values, territorial and environmental issues, racial and ethnic tension, and struggles for political power. Several organizations have been established, such as the United Nations and NATO, with the purpose of reducing or alleviating existing and future conflicts between nations.
