A nation is a political unit with a well-defined territory and a government that has authority over the people living there. While nations share many characteristics, they can also differ from one another in many ways. Some nations are rich, while others are poor. Some have mild climates and a single language, while others have severe weather patterns and languages that number in the hundreds. Some nations have stable and successful economies, while others are barely making ends meet. One of today's challenges is helping poorer nations meet the basic needs of their people.
