Most states have a bicameral, or two-house, legislative system. In order to be elected, each state legislator must meet certain requirements. The main job of the state legislature is to make laws, although citizens have a great deal of power in the proposal, approval, and rejection of state law. The revenue for state government comes from taxes such as sales tax, excise tax, and income tax.
